Lectins, as non-self-recognition factors, in crustaceans
نویسندگان
چکیده
Invertebrate immune system must rely on non-self-recognition molecules to ensure efficient defence responses against infectious pathogens that continuously threaten their survival. Lectins from the hemolymph of invertebrates, including crustaceans, have been regarded as potential molecules involved in immune recognition and microorganism phagocytosis through opsonization. This report presents an overview on the molecular characterisation, physiological role, synthesis and induction upon infection of arthropod lectins, with special emphasis on crustaceans. Although the participation of arthropod lectins in immune surveillance is not fully demonstrated, some recent reports in insects and horseshoe crabs appear to support this concept more convincingly. Unfortunately, such unambiguous evidences have not been thus far demonstrated in crustaceans. The results obtained in related arthropod groups could, however, be predictable for crustaceans. The precise mechanisms underlying non-self-recognition represent the basis to prevent and control infections as well as to stimulate animal resistance. This is particularly relevant for cultivated aquatic species, especially penaeid shrimps, which are frequently constrained by recurrent diseases that often provoke great economic losses. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The immune role of C-type lectins in molluscs
The phylum Mollusca is one of the largest and most important group in the animal kingdom. Recently, interest in molluscan immunity has increased due to their importance in worldwide aquaculture, their role in aquatic environmental science and their phylogenetic position, and a great number of immune molecules have been identified and characterized from molluscs. C-type lectins are a superfamily...
متن کاملThe roles of direct recognition by animal lectins in antiviral immunity and viral pathogenesis.
Lectins are a group of proteins with carbohydrate recognition activity. Lectins are categorized into many families based on their different cellular locations as well as their specificities for a variety of carbohydrate structures due to the features of their carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) modules. Many studies have indicated that the direct recognition of particular oligosaccharides on ...
متن کاملCharacterization of Multisugar-Binding C-Type Lectin (SpliLec) from a Bacterial-Challenged Cotton Leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis
BACKGROUND Various proteins that display carbohydrate-binding activity in a Ca(2+)-dependent manner are classified into the C-type lectin family. They have one or two C-type carbohydrate-recognition domains (CRDs) composed of 110-130 amino acid residues in common. C-type lectins mediate cell adhesion, non-self recognition, and immuno-protection processes in immune responses and thus play signif...
متن کاملDiagnostic Value of Lectins in Differentiation of Molar Placentas
Objective(s)Distinction of hydatidiform moles from non-molar specimens and subclassification of hydatidiform moles as complete and partial are important for clinical practice, but diagnosis based solely on histomorphology suffers from poor interobserver reproducibility. Nowadays, pathologists rely on molecular techniques, however these methods are technically difficult, relatively expensive, an...

Glycosylation of proteins has proven extremely important in a variety of cellular processes, including enzyme trafficking, tissue homing and immune functions. In the past decade, increasing interest in carbohydrate-mediated mechanisms has led to the identification of novel carbohydrate-recognizing receptors expressed on cells of the immune system. These non-enzymatic lectins contain one or more...
